Bird Island is a city located on U.S. Highway 212 in Renville County, Minnesota about an hour and a half drive west of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
The city is named for a nearby sixty-acre island. At one time, the island was surrounded by sloughs and covered with many huge, beautiful trees, which were a refuge for thousands of birds. After the installation of ditches and tile, the island became farmland and is no longer an island.
